Draft Result Drafted in the 2010 Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1st round with the #18 pick.
After watching their poor line play last season cost them a playoff spot the Steelers focus on upgrading the interior line with Maurkice Pouncey. Without Ben Roethlisberger under center for 4-6 games, the Steelers will need to regain offensive balance and run the football effectively in 2010. Pouncey is an athletic interior lineman who can effectively reach the second level as a blocker. He will likely start right away at right guard before eventually transitioning to his natural center position.

Strengths
  • By far the best center prospect in the class
  • In addition to center, Pouncey has 11 starts at guard
  • Finishes blocks on nose tackles without requiring help from guards
  • Excellent blocker in space. Makes key blocks on linebackers to open up draw plays. Has an opportunity to be top flight guard as well
  • Firm understanding of pass protection. Allows for quarterback to step up into the pocket
  • Gets 2nd round grade for position scarcity as much as his talent

Weaknesses
  • Occasionally misses a blitz pickup on running plays
  • Still learning the position. Played guard throughout high school
  • Technique can be lacking at times. Sometimes a superior talent like Pouncey is used to dominating on ability alone
