Draft Result

Drafted in the 2010 Draft by the New York Giants in the 1st round with the #15 pick.
With Rolando McClain off the board, the Giants take Jason Pierre-Paul who is one of the most physically gifted players in the draft. Pierre-Paul has the upside upside to be a draft's most dynamic pass rusher but he is extremely raw. The Giants depth at the position will provide an opportunity for him to develop as a situational pass rusher first. With only one year of Division I college football, the dividends of this pick may not show up until 2012. A surprise selection for a team loaded with defensive ends, but GM Jerry Reese subscribes to the best player available theory and knows the best pass defense is a pass rush.

Strengths

  • Tremendous athlete - excellent measureables
  • Moves well in space and chases down ball carriers in the open field
  • Good size - Has the body type to play in both a 3-4 or 4-3
  • Powerfully built
  • Gets off the ball in a hurry
  • Strong motor allowed him to make 15.5 TFL
  • Outstanding use of hands. Gets away from blockers very quickly
  • Outshined highly touted teammate George Selvie this season

Weaknesses

  • Raw - Only one year of Division I football. A junior college transfer in 2009
  • Gets by too much on natural talent at this stage
  • Overaggressive at times
  • Lacks discipline as a run defender
  • Needs to develop more pass rush moves
  • Only had 5.5 sacks, a low total for an top pass rusher
  • Will be drafted on athleticism and potential - Lots of raw talent but still needs to polish his game
