Marvin Austin
NFL Draft Scouting Report

Defensive Tackle

North Carolina

College Position: Defensive Tackle
School: North Carolina
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 310
Birthdate: 01-01-1989
Draft Projection: Second
Overall Rank: Unranked
NFL Draft Position (Rank): Defensive Tackle (7)

Draft Result

Drafted in the 2011 Draft by the New York Giants in the 2nd round with the #20 pick.
Austin was a highly regarded recruit in high school who sat out his entire junior season in 2010, but is a great athlete and penetrator inside. He gives the Giants some much needed depth and youth at the defensive tackle spot, and his playmaking ability could result in him being a starter sooner rather than later.

Strengths

  • Athletic defensive tackle prospect
  • Exceptional quickness
  • Well built - good size and strength
  • Strong at point of attack - sheds blocks and fills lanes
  • High ceiling as a pass rusher
  • Dominates in spurts
  • Moves well laterally - can make plays down the line

Weaknesses

  • Motor runs hot and cold
  • Will be drafted on potential more than production
  • Needs to refine technique - gets by on athleticism
  • Needs to play with better leverage - gets too high at times
  • Questionable judgement - suspended for senior season for contact with an agent
  • At the center of UNC's agent scandal
  • Missing senior season cost Austin the chance to answer concerns about consistency and technique
