Ryan Kerrigan

Ryan Kerrigan
NFL Draft Scouting Report

Defensive End

Purdue

College Position: Defensive End
School: Purdue
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-4
Weight: 263
Birthdate: 08-16-1988
Draft Projection: Mid First
Overall Rank: 11
NFL Draft Position (Rank): Defensive End (4)

Draft Result

Drafted in the 2011 Draft by the Washington Redskins in the 1st round with the #16 pick.
The selection of Kerrigan to the Redskins should be an interesting situation. Kerrigan was ultra-productive with Purdue, but will switch positions and play standing up in Washington in their 3-4 defense. He displayed the athleticism to play the position at the Combine, and his high motor should complement Brian Orakpo very well.

Strengths

  • Tenacious two-way defensive end prospect
  • Equally adept stopping the run or rushing the passer
  • Tremendous motor
  • Has a nose for the football - tenacious defender
  • Knack for forcing fumbles (11 FF the past two years)
  • Quick burst and acceleration off the ball
  • Shoots gaps to make plays in opposing backfields
  • Strong against the run
  • Hard worker with excellent intangibles
  • Has shined the past two years despite commanding double teams on a below average defense
  • Three year starter

Weaknesses

  • Tends to play too high
  • Needs to improve his ability to shed blocks
  • Over-reliant on shooting gaps and bull rushing
  • Lacks great speed
  • Average athleticism - not a prime rush linebacker candidate
  • More of a grinder than a premier speed rusher
  • A throw-back player who will either shine due to his hard work and motor or fail to adjust to the speed and power of the pro game
