Drafted in the 2011 Draft by the New England Patriots in the 1st round with the #17 pick.
The Patriots make Solder the second tackle to come off the board, selecting the former tight end at No. 17. Solder needs a little work technique-wise, but he has wonderful upside and fills a big need for the Patriots down the line at the left tackle spot protecting Tom Brady's blind side.

Strengths

  • High upside left tackle prospect
  • Rare athleticism for a left tackle
  • Ideal size at 6'9, 315 lbs - long arms
  • Nimble feet to mirror pass rushers
  • Hard worker with strong intangibles
  • Gets to the 2nd level as a run blocker
  • Strong character and work ethic
  • Colorado lists him as having 7% body fat a 4.88 40 and 32" vertical
  • Colorado website lists him as having allowed just 7 pressures the past two seasons
  

Weaknesses

  • Converted tight end who is still learning how to play tackle
  • Talented but raw technically - just two years as a linemen
  • Does not utilize his long arms to his advantage
  • Needs to sustain his blocks
  • Struggles with blocks to his right side
  • Average run blocker - does not get a lot of push and struggles to locate his man at times
  • High upside but will need time to develop
  • Needs to get stronger especially in the lower body
  • At Senior Bowl it was clear he is more natural to the left side, struggled with technique on the right side
