NFL Draft Scouting Report

Quarterback

Nevada

College Position: Quarterback
School: Nevada
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-6
Weight: 215
Birthdate: 11-03-1987

NFL Draft Position (Rank): Quarterback (6)

Draft Result

Drafted in the 2011 Draft by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2nd round with the #4 pick.
Kaepernick, like Dalton, was a consumate winner in college, proving he had all the intangibles to succeed. He's got a good arm and is an outstanding athlete, and working with Harbaugh could be a match made in heaven for the former leader of the Nevada Wolf Pack.

Strengths

  • First quarterback to throw for 2,000 yds and rush for 1,000 yds in three straight seasons
  • Athletic quarterback - long strider who can make plays with his feet
  • Decisive
  • Great intangibles - Confident leader, charismatic, strong character
  • Ideal height
  • Keeps eyes down field and throws well on the run
  • Good arm strength
  • Strong work ethic - improved markedly throughout his career
  • Adjusted well to taking snaps from center at the Senior Bowl
  • Experienced four year starter

Weaknesses

  • Has an elongated delivery which he will struggle to shorten due to long arms
  • Sidearm delivery minimizes his height advantage - low trajectory on passes
  • Lacks accuracy and spiral on his deeper passes
  • Comes out of a Pistol offense and will need to adjust to a conventional pro offense with snaps from center and more complex reads in the passing game
  • Looks uncomfortable in the pocket - doesn't see the field well
  • Thin build
  • Great athlete but lack of bulk and average change of direction makes a position change unlikely
