Mike Johnson
NFL Draft Scouting Report

Guard

Alabama

College Position: Guard
School: Alabama
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-5
Weight: 305
Birthdate: 04-02-1987
Draft Projection: Second
Overall Rank: Unranked
NFL Draft Position (Rank): Guard (2)

Draft Result

Drafted in the 2010 Draft by the Atlanta Falcons in the 3rd round with the #34 pick.
A good value pick with the versatility to play multiple spots. Adds needed depth to the Falcons offensive line.

Strengths

  • Position versatility. Starting experience at both tackle spots in addition to guard
  • Understands the game. A leader in the locker room for the Crimson Tide
  • One of the best run blocking guards in the draft. Makes good initial contact, finishes blocks and gets to the second level
  • Consistently takes proper angles on plays such as draws and screen plays. One of the reasons Alabama running backs had numerous big plays was due to Mike Johnson engulfing linebackers and defensive backs down the field
  • Has a firm grasp of pass protection and provides help to his tackle and center to prevent sacks

Weaknesses

  • Started 14 games at offensive tackle in college, but did not excel. Was dominated by Paul Kruger in the 2008 Sugar Bowl
  • Occasionally plays too high against bigger defensive tackles
  • Plays with too much aggression at times and is prone to swim moves
  • Lacks ideal bulk and strength
