Trent Williams
NFL Draft Scouting Report

Offensive Tackle

Oklahoma

College Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Oklahoma
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-5
Weight: 318
Birthdate: 07-19-1988
Draft Projection: Late First
Overall Rank: Unranked
NFL Draft Position (Rank): Offensive Tackle (5)

Draft Result

Drafted in the 2010 Draft by the Washington Redskins in the 1st round with the #4 pick.
Trent Williams has great athleticism and is a good fit for Mike Shanahan's zone blocking scheme. He possesses a high ceiling and the Redskins are expecting him to start right away at left tackle, a position where he struggled in 2009. As a run blocker Williams will be huge upgrade to the Washington offensive line but the success of this pick will ultimately depend on whether Williams is able to prove he is capable of becoming a blindside protector.

Strengths

  • Played both right and left tackle at Oklahoma
  • Hard worker who plays with heart
  • Understands pass protection. Helps out guards by taking away inside gap
  • Takes proper angles to blockers on running plays
  • Tremendous football IQ. If Williams gets beat, it won't be because of bad fundamentals
  • Position versatility - Has the skill set to play all 5 positions

Weaknesses

  • Does not wow you with his overall athletic ability
  • One on one drills at the Senior Bowl could be a problem. Williams will look better on drills when center, guard and tackle are participating
  • Struggled at left tackle in 2009. Keep in mind, slow footed Phil Loadholt played the left side over Williams in 2008
  • Does not overpower defenders, relies more on technique
  • A right tackle stuck in a left tackle or guard body
