Draft Result

Drafted in the 2010 Draft by the Seattle Seahawks in the 1st round with the #6 pick.
Russell Okung fills the team's need for a left tackle to replace Walter Jones. He was the draft's top offensive tackle and has the same elite skillset possessed by former top 5 picks Jake Long and Joe Thomas. He is the dominant pass protector and physical run blocker Seattle has been lacking with Walter Jones sidelined much of the past two seasons. In 2007 Seattle made the playoffs. With Walter Jones playing just 2 games in 2008 and 2009 Seattle was a combined 9-23. By filling their left tackle need here the Seahawks were positioned to use the best player available theory in the later rounds which played a key role in allowing the Seahawks to acquire one of the most heralded draft classes.

Strengths

  • Best footwork of any pass blocker in the draft
  • Great zone blocker in the running game. Gets to the second level on run blocks.
  • Four year starter in college. Played at right tackle as a freshman and has started at left tackle ever since
  • Aggressive as a run blocker. Most athletic linemen rely on quickness to seal the edge. Okung can do that and still drive a guy 5 yards off the ball
  • Uses long arms to his advantage. Has the ability to reach for his block without losing balance or holding
  • One of the safest picks in the draft

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't have overwhelming bulk.
  • Drive blocking can be an issue on occasion. Plays better when defensive linemen are in a gap or stunting
  • Has a tendency to play a little high
